🌿 A Trip to Lampang 🌿
While traveling to Lampang for work, the Emerald Estates Thailand team had the chance to explore several fascinating places around the city. We would love to share this short travel article with everyone 🙏
Lampang is a peaceful and charming city located in Northern Thailand, about a 3-hour drive from Chiang Mai. The city is known for its quiet atmosphere, beautiful colonial-era architecture, and rich cultural heritage.
Historically, many wealthy Burmese businessmen connected to the Bombay Burma Trading Corporation settled here, which is why visitors can still see many Burmese-style mansions and architectural influences throughout the city today. Lampang is also famous for its traditional horse carriage rides around town 🐎
Emerald Travel and Tour is now arranging trips like this for travelers who would like to experience Northern Thailand beyond Chiang Mai ✨
In this article, we have included some of the places we visited, map locations, and video clips as well.
Please Enjoy Krub 🙏🙏🙏

1. Wat Chong Kham Phra Aram Luang
(วัดจองคำพระอารามหลวง)
This temple complex is home to the monastery of the revered “Sayadaw Yarkyaw” and a beautiful Buddha Gaya-inspired pagoda.
After General Ne Win seized power in Myanmar in 1962, many influential monks and religious leaders faced persecution under the pretext of religious purification campaigns. During that period, the Sayadaw left his original monastery compound, Kaba Aye Mahā Sangha Nayaka Monastery, and relocated to Thailand.
In the outskirts of Lampang, he rebuilt and resided in a wooden monastery modeled after his original residence. Even today, the Sayadaw continues teaching Buddhist scriptures and monastic discipline while serving as a senior member (Vice Chairman) of the Thai Sangha Council.
Visitors may only have the opportunity to pay respects after 12 noon, once the Sayadaw has finished his meal. Due to his advanced age, he does not receive visitors every day, so meeting him is considered extremely fortunate. Our team was lucky enough to receive his blessings and teachings 🙏
Next to the monastery, visitors can also explore the impressive Buddha Gaya-style pagoda and temple grounds.

2. Lampang Cultural Street Market
After visiting the Sayadaw, it was already around 4 PM, so we headed to Lampang’s traditional evening walking street market.
The market is filled with local food stalls, fresh fruits, handmade products, antiques, and vintage shops. It has a warm local atmosphere and is a wonderful place to stroll around ✨

3. Le Neuf Nakorn Lampang (Boutique Hotel)
This was the boutique hotel where we stayed overnight.
It is a relatively small hotel with reception and parking on the ground floor. Some rooms had weaker air-conditioning, but overall the hotel offered a cozy and comfortable stay. There are also more premium hotel options available in Lampang 😊

4. Mao Deep Pub
(A popular beer pub with unplugged live music)
We highly recommend this place 🍻
The live unplugged performances at night create a very relaxing atmosphere. The staff members were polite, friendly, and naturally charming, which added even more warmth to the overall experience.

5. Kong Kee Bamee Gaio Pet Yang Hongkong
(Famous roasted duck, roasted pork & congee restaurant)
This is one of the most famous places in Lampang for roasted duck, crispy pork, and rice congee.
The congee was smooth and flavorful, while the roasted pork was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside 🤤
Many menu items sell out by around 1 PM, so visiting for breakfast is highly recommended.

The shrine is dedicated to giant guardian spirits and is always crowded with worshippers, people making vows, and devotees returning to offer thanks after their wishes come true 🙏

7. Moung Ngwe Zin Building
This historic mansion belonged to U Ngwe Zin, a wealthy timber merchant associated with the Bombay Burma Company.
It is said that he was once wealthy enough to lend money even to the Thai King. The mansion is richly decorated with teak wood throughout the interior, and its elegance still shines beautifully today.
It is also a very popular location for Instagram photography 📸

8. Memory Cafe and Guest House
A cozy and popular café in Lampang ☕️
The atmosphere is warm and relaxing, making it a perfect place to sit and unwind. Right next to the café is a small grilled pork meatball skewer shop that is very popular among locals.
It is located on the same street as the Ngwe Zin Mansion, an area also known as Lampang Night Market Street.

9. Wat Chai Mongkol
(Aung Mingalar Monastery)
This monastery was donated and built by the timber tycoon U Ngwe Zin.
Today, only one Thai monk remains to maintain and care for the enormous compound. Visitors can still admire the beautiful traditional Burmese wood carvings and Burmese-style Buddha images preserved within the monastery.
On one side of the compound, visitors may also pay respects to the famous Bo Bo Gyi spirit shrine.
Although parts of the buildings now suffer from leaking roofs and aging structures, the monk’s simplicity, peacefulness, and dedication to maintaining the vast compound leave a deep impression on visitors 🙏

10. Wat Phra That Hariphunchai (Lamphun)
This temple is famous throughout Northern Thailand for its spiritual significance and reputation for answered prayers.
Many Northern Thai people wear miniature Buddha amulets from this temple as necklaces or accessories for blessings and protection. The temple is constantly visited by worshippers and pilgrims ✨🙏
